The abbeys and the convent in Lyons Andelle

Notre-Dame de Fontaine-Guérard Abbey

The abbey is a model of the Anglo-Norman architecture. The whisper of the wind, the course of the river Andelle, the echo of the silent stones.

In the Andelle Valley, cuddled up in a silent and peaceful forest and near a « healing fountain », there formely was a women’s abbey devoted to prayer and meditation:  the Notre-Dame de Fontaine Guérard Abbey. Founded in 1190, it was blessed in 1218 by the king of France, Saint-Louis. Despite the violence of the French Revolution, the remaining buildings are one of the most beautiful masterpiece of gothic Anglo Norman architecture from the beginning of the 13th century, when the Cistercian rigour was at its apogee.

During your visit, you will discover the troglodytic cellar, the church with a vaulted choir, the chapterhouse, the nuns’ building, the work room, the dormitory with an impressive framework, and monastic gardens with sculptures that remind us of the women who lived here.

Offered services: free car park, shop, ecological composting toilets. Possibility to rent the place for movies, photo shoots, historical reconstitution or family events.LOGO ABBAYES NORMANDES WEBLOGO MONUMENTS HISTORIQUES 600X600

Mortemer Abbey

At the heart of Lyons’ forest, the ruins of the abbey stand in a bucolic setting which invites you for an -almost- mystic stroll in this place filled with history.

At the centre of the domain, the building of the 18th century hosts a museum. Thanks to an audio-visual system, the daily way of life of the monks is presented, even in the cellar where you can see the tools, the bread oven, and also the famous Sainte-Catherine fountain, cherished by young women looking for a husband…

In the park, you’ll discover “the path of the Dukes of Normandy”, and it’s possible to finish your visit by sauntering on the border of the pond, unless you prefer get on the rustic little train which goes on the length of the pond.

During the high season, the Mortemer Abbey organises shows, exhibitions and a lot of animations for the pleasure of all.NORMANDIE_Marque_destination_FR_BICHRO_BLEULOGO MONUMENTS HISTORIQUES 600X600

Couvent des Cordeliers

This convent is situated between the rue de la Rigole and the river Lieure and was built in 1624. It was inhabited by monks until the French Revolution of 1789. As soon as 1793, the convent is classified as « National property » and shelters a printed-cotton factory and a glass factory. In 1852, a fire destroyed the church but the conventual building was spared. It is today a private property that is opened 50 days a year, with guided tours upon reservation (visit of the exteriors of the conventual building).
