You will discover a picturesque village with a strong character, with half-timbered houses of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The streets in the town centre trace a central ring around the old feudal mound. During the 18th century, when the duke of Penthièvre was a benefactor, the village was an administrative place.

As witness, there is the court room classified as National Heritage site, in the town hall, as well as the dungeon.

Many monuments in Lyons-la-Forêt are a proof of the rich history of the village: old convents near the river Lieure, water mills, old constabulary…

The town centre of this charming village is represented by the covered market that gets animated thanks to markets and exhibitions. It shelters a typical village market all year long.

It also was the shooting place for two different movie versions of « Madame Bovary », one by Jean Renoir in the 1920′s, the othe by Claude Chabrol, shot in 1990.

The restaurants and the cafes’ terraces surrounding the covered market get lively  on sunny days, especially on market days.

“I know that Lyons has two faces, as I have often been here. A sweet, quiet and countryside-like life. And an agitated life, when the end of the week start to look like a week-end around the covered market.”

Philippe DELERM
